The Lost Wax Casting Process – From Ancient Craft to Modern Precision Manufacturing

Lost wax casting, also known as investment casting, is one of the oldest and most precise metal-forming techniques in human history. The process begins with creating a wax model that replicates the exact shape of the desired product. Traditionally, craftsmen used a mixture of beeswax, rosin, and animal fat to sculpt the wax pattern.

Once the wax model is ready, it is repeatedly coated with layers of fine clay slurry, quartz sand, plant fibers, and sawdust. Each layer is allowed to dry before applying the next. After several coatings, a solid ceramic shell forms around the wax pattern.

The mold is then gently heated, allowing the wax to melt and drain out — this step gives the method its name: lost wax. The remaining shell is sintered at a moderate temperature (typically below 800°C) to strengthen it while preserving its shape. Molten metal is then poured into the cavity to replace the wax. When the metal cools and solidifies, the shell is broken away, revealing a metal casting identical to the original wax pattern.
