Stainless Steel Metallurgy Grade Overview
- Core Functions of Alloying Elements
Stainless steel is an iron-based alloy whose microstructure and performance are precisely tuned by chemical composition. Carbon improves hardness and wear resistance, ideal for heavy-duty tools and professional cutlery. Chromium is the foundational element, forming an invisible, self-healing chromium oxide passive layer that delivers excellent resistance to tarnishing, staining and atmospheric corrosion. Nickel stabilizes the austenitic structure, enhancing formability, ductility and weldability while strengthening structural durability in harsh working environments.
- Three Primary Stainless Steel Families
Industrial stainless steels are categorized into three major microstructural families with distinct properties and applications:
2.1 Austenitic Stainless Steel (Industry Standard)
Featuring high chromium and nickel content, austenitic grades offer superior corrosion resistance and are generally non-magnetic in the annealed condition (slight magnetism may occur after cold working). As the most widely used grade, 304 stainless steel provides a tensile strength of 621 MPa and a maximum operating temperature of 870°C, suitable for food processing equipment, home appliances and aerospace fasteners. Grade 316 incorporates molybdenum, delivering stronger resistance to chloride, seawater and industrial chemicals. With a tensile strength of 579 MPa and a working temperature limit of 800°C, it is commonly applied in pharmaceutical facilities, chemical piping and marine hardware.
2.2 Ferritic Stainless Steel (Cost-Effective & Magnetic)
Ferritic alloys adopt a low-nickel, straight-chromium microstructure with inherent magnetism and outstanding cost efficiency. They perform excellently against nitric acid corrosion and can be hardened via cold forming. Grade 430 offers reliable atmospheric and chemical corrosion resistance for industrial panels and household appliances. As an upgraded version, Grade 434 features improved tensile strength, high-temperature stability and pitting resistance, making it ideal for outdoor architectural panels, exhaust systems and refinery components.
2.3 Martensitic Stainless Steel (High Hardness & Impact Resistance)
Martensitic grades are the least common among the three families, designed for scenarios requiring extreme mechanical strength, hardness and impact resistance. Though its chemical corrosion resistance is slightly lower than austenitic steel, Grade 420 resists mild acids, fresh water and food-related compounds effectively. It serves as the premium material for surgical instruments, high-end cutlery and industrial shear blades.
- Advanced Duplex Stainless Steel
Duplex stainless steel balances approximately equal proportions of austenitic and ferritic microstructures. Optimized with higher chromium and lower nickel content, it combines high yield strength, excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance and better ductility than ferritic steel, presenting superior cost performance for extreme environments such as offshore energy and chemical plants. Classified by the Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN): Lean Duplex (PREN 22–27) for general civil construction; Standard Duplex (PREN 28–38, represented by 2205) for chemical transport and marine hardware; Super Duplex (PREN 38–45, e.g. 2507, Zeron 100) with chromium, nickel, molybdenum, tungsten and copper additives, specialized for severe chloride corrosion in oil and gas industries.
| Grade | Microstructure | Key Features | Tensile Strength | Max Operating Temp | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 304 | Austenitic | General-purpose, balanced strength & corrosion resistance | 621 MPa | 870°C | Food processing, home appliances, aerospace fasteners |
| 316 | Austenitic | Molybdenum added, superior chloride/marine corrosion resistance | 579 MPa | 800°C | Pharmaceutical equipment, chemical piping, marine hardware |
| 430 | Ferritic | Magnetic, cost-effective, good nitric acid resistance | Standard ferritic strength | 1425–1510°C melting range | Automotive trim, furnace parts, domestic appliances |
| 434 | Ferritic | Upgraded 430, better pitting resistance & thermal stability | Improved tensile strength | 1426–1510°C melting range | Outdoor panels, exhaust systems, oil refinery components |
| 420 | Martensitic | Ultra-high hardness & impact resistance, mild corrosion resistance | High mechanical strength | 1450–1510°C melting range | Surgical tools, high-end cutlery, industrial blades |
| 2205 (Duplex) | Duplex (Dual-phase) | High yield strength, anti-stress corrosion cracking | Excellent dual-phase strength | 1385–1440°C melting range | Desalination, offshore oil & gas, chemical pressure vessels |
- Performance & Application Summary of Common Grades
Grades 304, 316, 430, 434, 420 and 2205 duplex steel cover mainstream industrial applications, differing significantly in corrosion resistance, temperature tolerance and mechanical properties. The actual operating temperature must be kept below the melting point, with sufficient safety margins reserved according to specific pressure and corrosive conditions.
- Industry Chromium-Nickel Ratio Explanation
Markings such as 18/8, 18/10 and 18/0 indicate the chromium-to-nickel percentage ratio. 18/8 steel (18% chromium, 8% nickel) is a universal general-purpose grade. 18/10 steel contains 10% nickel, providing finer metallic luster, better pitting resistance and higher durability under frequent sterilization, perfect for high-end kitchen and medical equipment. 18/0 steel has a nickel content below 0.75%, reducing costs but being more susceptible to surface oxidation, and is mainly used for ordinary civilian products.
