Precision Investment Casting: Enhancing Manufacturing Accuracy and Complexity

2025-12-04

Summary:
Investment casting, also known as lost-wax casting, is a time-honored manufacturing process renowned for its high precision, excellent surface finish, and ability to produce intricate components. Widely used in aerospace, automotive, and medical industries, it enables the creation of parts that are difficult to achieve with other casting methods.

Investment Casting Process Flow

Step Description
Model Making Wax models identical to the final product are produced, typically using injection molding.
Wax Assembly & Tree Formation Wax models are assembled onto a pouring system, forming a tree structure to cast multiple parts simultaneously, improving efficiency.
Ceramic Shell Formation The wax tree is dipped in ceramic slurry multiple times, with drying in between, forming a ceramic shell.
Wax Removal The wax is melted out in a furnace, creating a hollow mold cavity—hence the name “lost-wax” casting.
Metal Melting & Pouring The mold is preheated, and molten metal is poured into the ceramic shell to solidify into the final part.
Post-Processing The ceramic shell is broken away, parts are cut from the tree, and finishing operations such as grinding, polishing, or machining are applied.

Common Materials for Investment Casting

Material Key Properties Applications
Stainless Steel Corrosion-resistant, excellent mechanical properties Food processing, medical, marine
Low-Alloy Steel High strength and toughness Heavy-duty components
